Don’t try to pin a genre on Post Malone. Since he hit the scene in 2011, he’s been twisting assumptions and expectations time and again as he morphs from pop to hip-hop to rock to grunge and back again. Look no further than his ink-covered body and you’ll find a wide range of musical influences leading to his unpredictable musical endeavors.
Though his latest effort, F-1 Trillion, arrives amongst a frenzy of freshly twang-soaked pop and rock stars new to the genre, here are seven key moments that reveal Posty has been a little bit country all along.
Hailing from Grapevine, TX, and cutting his musical teeth on a Rock Band video game guitar controller in his teenage bedroom, this full-of-hometown-hero-pride CBS Texas coverage gives a peek into Austin “Post” Malone’s childhood. His proud papa tells tales of his upbringing and a local Italian restaurateur recounts Post’s first live performances, which included southern rock and, you guessed it, country covers.
This 2018 X post from Toby Keith reveals a (presumably) late-night rendition of “Kansas City” shared with Post Malone and Waterloo Revival. The duo delivers a leave-it-all-on-the-court and whiskey-soaked vocal performance of the blues classic. Just some good old boys making noise on the tour bus.
Also all the way back in 2018, Posty joined Kentucky crooner Dwight Yoakam’s SiriusXM show the Bakersfield Beat for a duet engagement featuring Yoakam’s smash, “A Thousand Miles From Nowhere.” Little did we know we were only getting a flash of more to come from the duo in the successive years, including a Posty pop-in at 2024’s Stagecoach to join Yoakam as well as an appearance at his July 2024 Greek Theater performance.

All that foreshadowing Post Malone + Dwight Yoakam love led to the ultimate TMZ moment in late summer 2024, when the pair were spotted in sparkling western wear riding horses down Sunset Boulevard on a video shoot for their new single, “I Don’t Know How to Say Goodbye (Bang Bang Boom Boom).”
Before we even knew the depths of his country love, Posty threw some R-E-S-P-E-C-T toward national treasure, Dolly Parton, during his 2019 Bonnaroo set. Wearing a head-to-toe matching set bearing her gorgeous visage, it was too good for Parton herself not to share via X.
King George Strait is nearly unparalleled when it comes to hitting markers of success in the music business. Post Malone knows the feeling. He was caught on camera sneaking backstage at Strait’s Salt Lake City stadium show earlier this year and also covered his hit “Carrying Your Love with Me” live on stage at his own show – featuring talented Nashville-based fiddle slayer, Lillie Mae.
In July of 2024, on the heels of releasing one of the summer’s biggest singles, “I Had a Little Help” with Morgan Wallen, Posty finally released his feature-length, 18-song country effort, F-1 Trillion. Tapping a who’s who of ‘90s and modern country superstars, the young man from Grapevine, TX, tops the charts in yet another genre, proving that he contains multitudes.
